Mrs. Boxer:  Mr. President, I ask my colleagues to join me in congratulating Tony Gwynn on his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 29, 2007.  During an illustrious 20-year career spent entirely with the San Diego Padres, Tony Gwynn was a consummate sportsman whose excellence at the plate earned him the recognition as one of the greatest hitters in the game’s long and storied history.

Cardinals Sign 1st Round Draft Choice Levi Brown

Flagstaff, Arizona – Levi Brown is finally an Arizona Cardinal after he missed almost a week of training camp and it will cost him at least seven practices. The team’s No. 1 draft pick agreed to a six-year contract Thursday, although now he must play catch-up and prove he is ready to get on the field.

SDSU Men’s Soccer Recruiting Class Ranked No. 19 in Nation

Tallahassee, Florida - San Diego State’s 2007 men’s soccer recruiting class has been listed among the top 20 in America by College Soccer News for the second consecutive season. The publication ranked the Aztecs’ incoming class No. 19, after having the 17th-best class a year ago.

Diamondbacks Place Carlos Quentin on Disabled List

Phoenix, Arizona - The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today they have placed outfielder Carlos Quentin on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain. In a corresponding move, the club selected the contract of outfielder of Justin Upton. Quentin was batting .208 (45-for-216) with five home runs and 28 RBI in 71 games this season with the D-backs. He was recalled to the Majors on July 27 after a brief stint with Tucson (AAA).

Shane Doan, Derek Morris & Bill Thomas to Attend Youth Mini-camp

The Phoenix Coyotes are excited to announce that right wings Shane Doan and Bill Thomas as well as defenseman Derek Morris will be guest instructors at their inaugural Youth Hockey Mini-Camp which will take place Friday, August 17th through Sunday, August 19th. The camp will be held at Oceanside Arena in Tempe. The Arena is located at 1520 N. McClintock Drive.

Joe Suder Named as a Super Sophomore

Yuma, Arizona – Arizona Western College announced today that Matadors’ football player Joe Suder has been named as a ‘Super Sophomore’ in the Junior College Report in Street & Smith’s 2007 Official College Football Yearbook. Suder was one of only 25 sophomores around the country to make the list of the nationally respected magazine.

Padres acquire Mackowiak from White Sox, Ensberg from Astros

(KXO) San Diego, California - The San Diego Padres announced today the club has acquired outfielder Rob Mackowiak from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jon Link. San Diego has also acquired infielder Morgan Ensberg and cash considerations from the Houston Astros for a player to be named or cash considerations. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcements.
