Yuma, Arizona - Arizona Western College has announced that the 2007 AWC Volleyball schedule has been released. The release of the schedule happens a little over a month before the 2007 Lady Matadors take the practice court August 6th in preparation to defend their 7th straight Region I title.
.
The Lady Matadors will get chances early in the season to get comfortable in the friendly confines of ‘The House’ on the campus of AWC as they’ll play three of their four matches of the season at home. The Lady Mats will officially break the seal on the 2007 regular season by hosting the same team that they ended the conference season with in 2006, the Yavapai Lady Roughriders. The rematch of last year’s exciting Region I Championship game will happen Friday night, August 24th at ‘The House’, and it will pit two teams that faced each other five different times in 2006. After traveling to Phoenix College August 29th for their first conference road match, the Lady Mats then come home for a huge conference matchup against the team that finished 2nd in the nation last season, the Lady Coyotes of Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Friday, August 31st; quickly followed by a matchup against Eastern Arizona at home the following night, September 1st. After that, the Lady Mats will get used to the road, as they won’t have another home match for the rest of the month of September. They’ll travel to non-conference tournaments in El Cajon, California (Cuyamaca Classic September 7th and 8th) and in Scottsdale (Valley of the Sun Tournament September 13th through the 15th), and travel to face conference opponents South Mountain (September 5th), Mesa (September 12th), Pima (September 19th), Scottsdale (September 26th) and Yavapai (September 28th).
.
The Lady Mats will make up for that month on the road as 6 of their final 9 conference matches in October are at ‘The House’. Home matches in October include Phoenix (October 3rd), South Mountain (October 10th), and a three-matches-in-four-nights stretch all at home: Mesa (October 17th), Pima (October 19th) and Glendale (October 20th); plus the regular season home finale against Scottsdale October 26th. The Lady Mats then finish up the regular season schedule in Thatcher October 27th against Eastern Arizona. All of the Lady Matadors’ conference games-home and away-start at 7PM, except for AWC’s home game against Eastern Arizona September 1st, which begins at 5PM.
.
The Lady Matadors will be shooting for their 8th straight Region I Championship Game, which will be played Thursday, November 1st, at a site and time to be determined. The Lady Matadors finished the 2006 regular season with a 20-18 overall mark and a 11-7 conference record, won the Region I title over Yavapai, and then fell just short of heading to the NJCAA Tournament for the 4th time in 7 years, losing to Salt Lake Community College in the District I Championship at ‘The House’.
