Yuma, Arizona - Arizona Western College announced today that the 5th Annual Matador Spring Celebration will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 14th and 15th, and will encompass golf, football and education within the same 24-hour period.

The celebration commences Friday night, March 14th, with the 3rd Annual Matador Football Cardinal & Gold Wellton Spring Scrimmage and Barbeque at Antelope High School in Wellton. The event kicks off at 6PM at Buckeye Field-the football home of the Antelope Union High School Rams-with a barbeque. Then at approximately 6:30PM, fans can get their first look at Matador Football 2008 when James Pryor’s new-look Matadors take the field for a 60- minute scrimmage. Nearly 30 returners from the 2007 squad are expected to participate-including ’07 All-Region I performers Myles Wade and George Kauwalu, as well as ’07 starters Zach Gavin, D.J. Hampton, Korey Toomer, Marcus Benjamin and Shelton Danzy; and at least 30 incoming and redshirt freshmen. “We’re trying to gauge where we are at as a football program-offensively and defensively,” remarked AWC Head Football Coach James Pryor. “The opportunity to bring our kind of excitement to the Wellton area-in connection with the Spring Celebration Golf Tournament at The Links at Coyote Wash-is an awesome thing for everyone involved.”

Then, Saturday morning, March 15th, the 5th Annual Matador Spring Celebration Golf Tournament gives 144 golfers the chance to play a full 18 holes at one of the most breathtaking courses in Yuma County, The Links at Coyote Wash in Wellton. Matador fans remember that Coyote Wash officials actually debuted the back 9 of the course specifically for this tournament two years ago, and the course has only gotten better and more challenging ever since. For their $75 donation to the Matador Athletic Association, golfers will get breakfast on the course, lunch afterwards, plus greens fees, cart, chances to win prizes for ‘longest drive’ and ‘closest to the pin’, Suns, Diamondbacks and Padres’ tickets, and even a chance to win a brand-new car from Alexander Toyota for a designated ‘hole-in-one’ hole. All of the money raised for the Spring Celebration goes to the Matador Athletic Association-the main fundraising arm that provides AWC’s student-athletes and athletic programs with funds to become more successful-on and off the playing surface.

MAA officials are proud to announce that the golf tournament is a full sellout for the 2nd consecutive year. “The response we’ve received has been just amazing, and it continues to build,” said AWC Athletic Director Jerry Smith. “We filled up two weeks faster than last year, and the list includes many who played last year and were asking months in advance when they could sign up. We also have plenty of newcomers who wanted to play last year but couldn’t get in. The fact that we’ve filled up so fast is a testament to the hospitality of the Curtis family and the people at Coyote Wash, who have taken such good care of us and our guests for the past 5 years.”
