Yuma, Arizona - Arizona Western College announced today that Lady Matadors’ softball player Lisa Stratton has signed an official letter of intent to attend Lubbock Christian University in Lubbock, Texas, this fall, and play softball for the Lady Chaps this season.
The announcement comes on the same day that Stratton was also named as an NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-American with a fantastic 3.905 cumulative grade point average for her two years at AWC.

Stratton has spent much of her teen years in the spotlight on the softball diamond. Born and raised in Yuma, Stratton grew up watching the spring sports at AWC annually, especially the baseball team, which has been coached by her father, John, for the past 23 seasons. Lisa excelled on the softball diamond very early on, and immediately became an important cog in the success of the Yuma High Softball program when she arrived as a freshman. Stratton achieved 1st Team All-Conference accolades each of her four years as a Yuma Lady Crims’ outfielder. Stratton also got state recognition in 2003 when she was named as an Arizona 5A All-State Honorable Mention selection.

Stratton came to AWC in the fall of 2005 and immediately won a job in the 2006 starting outfield, and was inserted in the #2 spot in the lineup behind fellow outfielder and NJCAA All-American Ashlee Ackerman. Stratton did a great job helping the Matadors to score runs, and her 32 runs batted in was 3rd-best on the team in 2006. She also led the team in triples with 6, and hit .379 overall with 25 stolen bases and started every one of the Matadors’ games. As a sophomore, Stratton moved into the leadoff role for the first half of the season while staying in right field, and was again 2nd on the team in stolen bases with 12. Stratton played in all but six of the Matadors’ games during her sophomore campaign, led the team in walks (27), and was 3rd on the squad in runs scored with 41. Stratton batted .254 in 126 at-bats during 2007.

More importantly, Stratton has continued to pace the way for the Matadors’ softball team in the classroom. In addition to her selection as NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-American today, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association last November also named her as a 2006 Academic All-American. Stratton heads to the Lone Star State to be part of history as she becomes part of Lubbock Christian’s first-ever softball team. LCU will be part of the very competitive Sooner Athletic Conference, whose teams have won seven NAIA Softball National Championships since 1993.
