Yuma, Arizona - Arizona Western College announced that AWC Women’s Basketball player Yohanna Morton was named to the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball All-American’s 1st Team list. The announcement comes just days after the conclusion of the annual NJCAA Meetings, which were held in Providence, Rhode Island last week. It’s the second straight year that Morton has earned the NJCAA All-American honor, having been named to the 3rd team after the 2007-08 season. It’s also the 2nd time in the last two weeks that Morton has been named to an All-American postseason squad after the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association & State Farm Insurance named her to their WFCA/State Farm Coaches All-American 1st Team.Morton stepped up from the 3rd Team to the 1st Team on the All-American list over the past year after continuing to step her game up and lead her team to increased success. The native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic helped lead the Lady Matadors to the Region I Finals for the first time since 2003 by leading the team in scoring for the 2nd straight year (19.9 points per game). ‘Yo’ also knew how to play both the shooting guard and point guard spots equally well-as evidenced by her 3.5 assists per contest and 2.9 steals per game-both marks that led the team in those categories. Morton was among the leaders in scoring in the ACCAC all season long-one of several reasons why she earned 1st Team All-ACCAC honors for the 2nd straight year (and an All-Region I Division I squad selection), and why she finished 2nd in the ACCAC Player of the Year balloting. She capped off her Matador career with 29 points in the Region I Finals March 6th against eventual national champion Central Arizona College. Few were surprised by today’s honor, especially her head coach for the last three years, who saw her talent and her ability to make any team better a long time ago. “Yohanna’s done everything that’s been expected of her-and not just athletically,” said AWC Women’s Head Basketball Coach Patrick Cunningham. “She’s in line to graduate and move on to a 4-year school because she’s done well in the classroom. Her accomplishments are also a result of what the support of Arizona Western College’s international program, campus life and enrollment services among others have done to help her excel on and off the floor. What she’s done for the past three years is a big source of pride for the Matador family.” |
