Yuma, Arizona - Hey we took our family to a College football game and a hockey game broke out. Or shall we say a good ole rumble or maybe better stated a gang incident. Last night at Veteran’s Stadium in Yuma, home field of the Arizona Western College Matador football team, the Community College was once again embarrassed by the actions, lack of discipline and lack of respect for coaches by certain players. One might argue that this was just a simple misunderstanding of a few isolated players not an all out melee’ or donnybrook. This is what we do know: with 9:55 left in the 4th quarter a fight involving several players broke out. The referees proceeded to litter the field with their penalty flags, and attempted to intervene. Unfortunately the fight took off for a second round and once it concluded the taunting by the players continued. How serious was this? A police car entered the stadium lights a blazing, and the referees felt it was not safe to resume the contest. “Not Safe”. Gee kids don’t try this at home. Tom Minnick - Matadors head coach, and John O’Mera - Gila Monsters head coach have repeatedly exclaimed that they instill discipline and build the character of their football teams. These coaches will be answering questions for months to come of how they allowed a hockey game to break out at a rivalry football game. The Aftermath: Players involved who had a chance to attend and play football at a four-year college will most probably learn those opportunities are on hold until further review. Both financially strapped Community Colleges will most probably re-address the necessity of continuing their football programs. Both coaches better re-assess their discipline instilling and character building skills or lack thereof. Oh by the way: Eastern Arizona defeated Arizona Western 37-17. Eastern Arizona College turned down an invitation to play in the North Star Bowl in Minnesota earlier this week for lack of financial resources. |
