Schofield Barracks, Hawaii - San Diego State freshman Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) fired a 6-under par 66 on Wednesday to lead the Aztec men’s golf team during the opening round of the 32nd annual John Burns Intercollegiate in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. SDSU shot a combined 10-under 278 over the first 18 holes to grab a share of the lead in the team standings, along with Auburn and Arizona at the 6,917-yard, par-72 Leilehua Golf Course.

With his effort, Carlsson carded his lowest score in relation to par as a collegian to forge a three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard, joining Auburn’s Jay Moseley and Tarquin MacManus of Arizona.  The three golfers hold a slim one-shot advantage over UNLV’s Eddie Olson, Stephen Hale of California and SMU’s James Minahan.

San Diego State had two other players shoot in red figures on Wednesday. Senior Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.) nearly set the course on fire with a blistering 31 on the front nine before finishing at 3-under 69 to tie for ninth place along with eight other competitors.  Meanwhile, freshman Matt Hoffenberg (Simi Valley, Calif.) sits one stroke in back of Goldberg in a tie for the 18th spot after firing a 2-under 70.

Rounding out the Aztec delegation was junior David Palm (Landvetter, Sweden), who shot a 1-over 73 to tie for 56th in his first action of the spring, and senior Chad Moscovic (Stockton, Calif.), who struggled on the back nine en route to a 5-over 77.

Second-round action at the John Burns Intercollegiate gets underway on Thursday with an 8 a.m. HST shotgun start.
