The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today that the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation will donate $622,880 to the Valley of the Sun United Way as part of the plan by the club's ownership group to give back $5 from every ticket sold during the team's final 20 games of the regular season to the local community.
The money raised will benefit chosen children's charities, including the Valley of the Sun United Way's "Success by 6" program, which focuses on improving quality early learning opportunities for all children. "This dollar total is astounding and will go to good use as we again impact our great community in a positive manner," said D-backs President Derrick Hall. "That number is a credit to the generosity of our owners and to the strong support of our fans. There is no greater reward than winning on the field during the stretch run, while winning off of the field as well." The D-backs sold 124,576 tickets during the final 20 home games to help the team bring in 2,324,367 fans to Chase Field during the 2007 baseball season. The club averaged 35,337 fans during the final 20 home games as the team battled for a playoff spot during the pennant stretch, including six crowds of 40,000 or more. The 2007 season attendance total was the highest since drawing 2,519,560 fans in 2004. The D-backs drew 2,058,741 fans to the ballpark in 2005 and 2,091,685 in 2006. Through the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation, the D-backs organization has donated more than $10 million to the Arizona community since 1998 through grant programs, including close to $2 million a year for the last three years. The cornerstone of the Foundation's giving is the "Diamonds Back" Field Building program, which has built or refurbished 26 youth baseball fields since 2000. |
