Jake Peavy of the San Diego Padres has been named the National League Pitcher of the month for August, while Andy Pettitte has earned American League Pitcher of the Month honors. Peavy, the National League's starting pitcher in the 2007 All-Star Game, was 5-0 with a 1.36 ERA. The two-time All-Star led the N.L. with 53 strikeouts and his five wins were tied for the top mark in his League.
The 26-year-old righthander fanned 10 or more in four of his August starts, including recording 11 strikeouts in three consecutive games. He also notched his 1,000th career strikeout on August 2nd vs. Arizona. He also recorded a string of 23 consecutive scoreless innings from July 27th - August 12th.
Other National League pitchers receiving consideration were Arizona's Brandon Webb (4-1, 1.83 ERA) and Micah Owings (1-2, 3.03 ERA, 32 SO); Cincinnati's Aaron Harang (4-0, 3.35 ERA, 36 SO); Takashi Saito (13 saves, 0.68 ERA, 21 SO) of the Dodgers; and San Francisco's Matt Cain (4-1, 2.18 ERA, 40 SO). Pettitte won all six of his starts in August to go along with a 2.36 ERA. He pitched 42.0 inning, allowing just three home runs, 35 hits and 13 walks. He struck out 34 batters. On the season, Pettitte is 12-8 with a 3.82 ERA and 127 strikeouts. Pettitte's August included a five-hitter, a six-hitter and a seven-inning effort in which he beat the rival Boston Red Sox. Also receiving consideration were Cleveland's Jake Westbrook (4-1, 1.90 ERA), Baltimore's Erik Bedard (2-1, 3.67 ERA) and Boston's Jonathan Papelbon (7 saves, 0.00 ERA, 9.2 IP). Andy Pettitte and Jake Peavy will each receive a Sharp AQUOS full HD LCD-TV and a specially designed trophy to commemorate their Pitcher of the Month performances. |
