San Diego, California - The San Diego Padres today announced that infielder Shea Hillenbrand has been signed to a Minor League contract by the club. Hillenbrand, who turned 32 today, will report to Triple-A Portland.

The right-handed hitting Hillenbrand played in 53 games this season with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim before being designated for assignment on June 29. He cleared waivers and became a free agent on July 11. Hillenbrand batted .254 (50-for-197) with five doubles, three home runs, 22 RBI, 19 runs scored and five walks. He signed with the Angels as a Major League free agent on Dec. 26, 2006.

The two-time American League All-Star (2002, 2005) has played in parts of seven seasons with the Boston Red Sox (2001-2003), Arizona Diamondbacks (2003-2004), Toronto Blue Jays (2005-2006), San Francisco Giants (2006) and Angels (2007). In 923 Major League games, he has a career average of .285 (997-for-3500) with 202 doubles, 13 triples, 107 homers, 481 RBIs, 457 runs scored and 138 walks. He was originally selected by the Red Sox in the 10th round of the 1996 First-Year Player Draft. .
