San Diego Padres Acquire Outfielder Jim Edmonds PDF Print E-mail

San Diego, California - The San Diego Padres today acquired outfielder Jim Edmonds and cash from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for infielder David Freese. Executive vice president/general manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.

Edmonds, 37, batted .252 (92-for-365) with 15 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs, 53 RBIs and 39 runs scored in 117 games with the Cardinals in 2007. He led all St. Louis outfielders with eight assists, tied for second most among National League center fielders.

A four-time All-Star (1995, 2000, 2003 and 2005), Edmonds has hit .287 (1,801-for-6,272) with 395 doubles, 23 triples, 362 home runs, 1,121 RBIs and 1,154 runs scored in 1,814 Major League games with the California/Anaheim Angels (1993-99) and Cardinals (2000-07). He has won eight Rawlings Gold Glove Awards for defensive excellence and has compiled a .990 career fielding percentage. Additionally, Edmonds' 124 outfield assists rank tied for second among outfielders over the last 15 seasons (1993-2007).

Edmonds has appeared in the postseason with the Cardinals in six of the last eight seasons (2000-02, 2004-06), including two World Series berths (2004 and 2006) and a World Series Championship (2006). He has a career .277 (61-for-220) postseason average in 61 games, including a .333 mark (27-for-81) in 22 Division Series contests. His 13 career postseason home runs are tied for the most all-time among National League sluggers.

Originally selected by the California Angels in the seventh round of the 1988 June Draft, Edmonds is a graduate of Diamond Bar (Calif.) High School where he was the California 5-A Co-Player of the Year as a senior (1988).

Freese, 24, batted .302 (152-for-503) with 31 doubles, six triples, 17 home runs, 96 RBI and 104 runs scored in 128 games with San Diego's Single-A Lake Elsinore affiliate in 2007. Primarily a third baseman, Freese was named to both the California League's Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star teams.

Selected by the Padres in the ninth round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of South Alabama, Freese has hit .307 (235-for-765) with 52 doubles, nine triples, 30 home runs, 166 RBI and 150 runs scored in 199 minor league games in the Padres system.
