San Diego, California - San Diego State University men’s soccer head coach Lev Kirshner has announced its schedule for the 2007 season. The 19-match schedule is highlighted by 12 home contests, including the second annual The Soccer Post/Aztec Classic (Sept. 7-9) and Alumni, Family and Friends Weekend (Oct. 6-7).
“We are excited for what will be another tough schedule,” head coach Lev Kirshner said. “The strong non-conference portion will get us ready for the challenge of Pac-10 play.”
The Aztecs kick off their season Aug. 31 in Omaha, Neb., when they take on perennial power Creighton. Last season, the Bluejays advanced to their 15th consecutive NCAA tournament before falling to Washington, 3-0, in the first round.
Following its home season opener against UC Riverside on Sept. 3, SDSU plays host to the second annual The Soccer Post/Aztec Classic over the weekend. The Aztecs face New Jersey Institute of Technology on Sept. 7 and then meet Farleigh Dickinson on Sept. 9. Last year, SDSU won both of its games at the inaugural classic, defeating Albany, 3-2, and NCAA tournament-bound Rutgers, 1-0.
The Aztecs wrap up their four-game home stand on Sept. 15 with a contest against Cal State Bakersfield.
SDSU then heads to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete in the UNLV Tournament. The Aztecs will play games in back-to-back days – Sept. 21 versus Missouri State and Sept. 22 against Drake.
On Sept. 29, SDSU plays host to UC Irvine in its final match before Pac-10 play.
The Aztecs kick off Alumni Weekend on Oct. 6 when they welcome 2006 NCAA runner-up UCLA, before playing in their annual alumni contest the following day (Oct. 7). This year, SDSU will celebrate the 20-year anniversary of its 1987 NCAA runner-up squad.
The following weekend, the Aztecs play host to California (Oct. 12) and Stanford (Oct. 14).
SDSU travels to the Pacific Northwest for matches against Washington (Oct. 19) and Oregon State (Oct. 21), before playing host to the same two teams on Oct. 26 (Huskies) and Oct. 28 (Beavers), respectively.
The Aztecs head to the Bay Area the following weekend with games against California (Nov. 2) and Stanford (Nov. 4).
SDSU plays host to Alabama A&M in its final non-conference and home match on Nov. 11 before wrapping up its regular season at UCLA on Nov. 17.
