 San Diego State defeated UC Santa Barbara 3-2 (35-33, 23-30, 13-30, 30-27, 15-9) The win ended a string of 10 straight losses to the Gauchos with SDSU's last win over UCSB coming in 1988. UC Santa Barbara received votes in the preseason AVCA/CSTV national poll It was the season opener for both teamsThe Aztecs were led by 16 kills from sophomore Stephanie Darnall, who also had19 digs Other Aztecs in double figures in kills included senior Lindsey Mahan (14), redshirt freshman Hannah Evans (12) and true freshman Lauren Salisbury (10). Senior Kelley Wahlin had 10 blocks. The match was the second of the day in the annual Aztec Invitational. In the opener, Long Island defeated Fairfield in three games (30-28, 30-19, 30-27).
