San Diego, California - The San Diego State women's tennis team claimed its second consecutive 7-0 sweep over a Mountain West Conference opponent when it blanked Wyoming at the Aztec Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. The Scarlet and Black improves to 9-12 overall and 2-5 in the MWC, while the Cowgirls drop to 10-11 overall and 1-6 in league action. Esther Cadua and Kathryn Kitts got SDSU off to a good start in doubles play by pinning an 8-1 defeat on Brittany DeFelice and Jamie Nelson at the No. 3 position. Milana Yusupov and Sisse Nielsen continued the Aztecs’ good fortunes as they clinched the early point with a similar 8-1 triumph over Michelle Brown and Carly VanHollen on court two. In the last match to finish, Wyoming’s Rebecca Berger and Corina Lazar prevented a doubles sweep by outlasting Eliska Krausova and Julia Trunk, 8-4. The Aztecs continued to shine in singles action as Krausova quickly disposed of VanHollen, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot for her 68th career victory, giving her sole possession of fifth place on the SDSU all-time charts. Holly Bagshaw then put the Scarlet and Black up by a 3-0 count with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Lazar at the top of the ladder, before Yusupov clinched the match by knocking off Brown (6-2, 6-3) on court five. Yusupov, who picked up her 18th overall victory, has now won four straight singles contests. With the match already decided, Cadua improved her MWC dual-match record to 6-1 with a straight-set triumph over Sarah Summerfield at No. 4. Nielsen also came out on top in her match on court five (4-6, 6-1, 2-1 ret.) before Trunk edged Berger, 6-3, 1-6, 10-5, in the second slot to complete the sweep. San Diego State will look to close out its conference slate with its third consecutive victory when it takes on Colorado State tomorrow (April 13) at 10 a.m. PDT. |
