The San Diego State men’s soccer team is ranked No. 24 in the Soccer America Preseason Poll, released Wednesday by www.socceramerica.com. Also on Wednesday, Soccer Times released its preseason poll and has the Aztecs receiving votes. In the Soccer America poll, SDSU is 24th, ahead of No. 25 UC Irvine and just behind Old Dominion (No. 20), North Carolina (No. 21), Rhode Island (No. 22) and Saint Louis (No. 23).
In the Soccer Times poll, San Diego State and Rutgers just missed the top 25 and came in at a tie for 26th with 31 points, just five points behind No. 25 Lehigh (36 points).
The rankings are one of numerous preseason accolades the Aztecs have garnered so far in 2007. SDSU is ranked in three preseason polls – No. 21 by Top Drawer Soccer, No. 24 by Soccer America and No. 25 by College Soccer News – and are receiving votes in two other polls (NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Times). Earlier this month, the Aztecs’ 2007 recruiting class was ranked No. 19 in the nation by College Soccer News.
San Diego State returns eight starters (10 or more starts), including 2006 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and College Soccer News 2007 Preseason All-American Nick Cardenas and all-conference players Kraig Chiles, Danny Ortiz and Dennis Sanchez, from the 2006 team that went 9-6-4 and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive season.
SDSU begins its season on the road against Creighton on Aug. 31 before playing host to UC Riverside on Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. on SDSU Sports Deck. |
