San Diego, California - The San Diego State men’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Alabama A&M Sunday afternoon at SDSU Sports Deck in its final non-conference game of the regular season. The Aztecs fell to 8-7-2, while the Bulldogs, who came into the weekend riding the momentum of a 4-3 upset victory at nationally ranked Duke, improved to 8-8-1.
SDSU had 10 shots in the match, including two apiece by senior Freddy McDonald, and sophomores Nick Cardenas and Jamel Wallace (San Diego/Oceanside HS).
Junior Jorge Rosales (2-5) had another solid outing in net, playing all 90 minutes and tying his San Diego State high with six saves.
The Aztecs had a flurry of shot attempts midway through the second half, including quality tries by sophomore Daniel Ortega (San Diego/Eastlake HS), McDonald and Wallace, but were unable to put the ball past Alabama A&M goalkeeper Paul Musoke.
SDSU had four corner kicks over the final 30 minutes and five of the final eight shots in match.
Rogers Atugonza (14th minute) and MfanaFuthi Bhembe (46th minute) each scored for the Bulldogs, while Mosito Ranko had two assists.
San Diego State travels to UCLA Wednesday for a Pac-10 Conference game beginning at 7 p.m.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Sophomore Jamel Wallace earned Man of the Match honors for the Aztecs for his impressive play. Wallace played all 90 minutes and had two shots (one on goal) while seeing time in the front and back line.
