Colorado Springs, Colorado - San Diego State senior Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif./Univ. of Kansas) has been named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for her performances at the 18th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic over the weekend. The weekly award is the fourth of her career and first bay an Aztec this season.
A two-time all-league selection and 2006 MWC Pitcher of the Year, Ross went 4-0 with a 0.58 ERA as the Aztecs went 5-0 to win their first-ever Campbell/Cartier Classic title. A left-hander, Ross tossed a combined 24 innings and allowed 16 hits and three walks, while striking out 18 batters.
In the team’s first game against Indiana on Friday, Ross allowed only one hit, an infield single, in five scoreless innings of the Aztecs’ 9-0 win.
The following day, Ross pitched five scoreless innings of relief in SDSU’s 2-0 triumph over Tulsa, once again allowing one hit while striking out three. In the nightcap on Saturday, Ross struck out a season-high 10 batters en route to a 3-2 San Diego State victory.
She closed out here weekend with a complete game win over UC Santa Barbara, 4-1.
On the season, Ross is 5-1 with a 0.52 ERA in 40 2/3 innings. She has 32 strikeouts and has limited her opponents to a .182 batting average.
The Aztecs, who are ranked No. 25 in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate poll, will travel to Cathedral City, Calif., this weekend to participate in the prestigious Palm Springs Classic. SDSU will play games against No. 10 Arizona (3:30 p.m. Friday), No. 3 Northwestern (8:30 p.m. Friday), No. 6 Oklahoma (3 p.m. Saturday), No. 18 Georgia (5:30 p.m. Saturday) and No. 13 Baylor (9 a.m. Sunday).
