San Diego, California - The San Diego State softball team puts its 4-1 record on the line this weekend when it plays host to the 18th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs, who are receiving votes in both the ESPN.com/USA Softball (10 points, 34th) and the USA Today/NFCA (eight points, 36th) polls, are one of six teams that scheduled to appear. This year’s participants include SDSU (4-1), UC Santa Barbara (1-3), Indiana (0-0), Tulsa (2-2), Fresno State (2-0) and Utah State (0-5). San Diego State kicks off the tournament with a game against UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. Thursday, before playing Indiana at 4:30 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, the Aztecs will take part in “Think Pink”, as they will assist in raising breast cancer awareness by wearing pink visors for its 4:30 p.m. game vs. Tulsa and its 7 p.m. contest against Fresno State. SDSU wraps up its competition on Sunday with solo contests against Utah State at 2 p.m. Aztec Quick Hits
* SDSU is receiving votes in each of the national polls after going 4-1 at the Cathedral City Kickoff last weekend. The Aztecs have 10 points in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, 29 points behind No. 25 Oregon State, and eight points in the USA Today/NFCA poll, 60 points behind the Beavers for the No. 25 spot.
* The Aztecs are off to a 4-1 start, tied for their third best start in school history. Only the 2005 squad (5-0) and 1993 team (5-0) had a better start to their season. The last time SDSU started 4-1 was the 2006 season, when it went on to finish with its best record in school history (34-15) and earned a trip to the NCAA regional final in Los Angeles.
* With its 3-0, nine-inning win over Cal Poly on Friday, San Diego State has now won eight consecutive season-openers and 11 of 12 during head coach Kathy Van Wyk’s tenure.
* Three different Aztec pitchers recorded shutouts last weekend, including senior Christina Ross, and freshmen Brooke Petty and Samantha Beasley. The trio combined to go 4-1 with a 0.59 ERA over the weekend, while limiting their opponents to a .180 batting average.
* Junior Syracuse transfer Tonye McCorkle leads the team with a .389 average, while junior Erin Floros is batting .375 with one homer and six RBI after missing most of last season with a torn ACL.
