A December 21 meeting against UConn and the third annual San Diego Surf ‘N Slam highlight the 2007-08 San Diego State women’s basketball schedule announced Friday by SDSU head coach Beth Burns. “We have put together a non-conference schedule that will prepare us for the level of competition in the Mountain West,” Burns said. “If you want to be the best, you have to play the best.
.
You can argue that over the last 10 years (UConn head coach) Geno (Auriemma) has been the best coach and UConn has been the best team. I think it’s an exciting opportunity for our team and for our community.”
UConn is one of 15 home games for the Aztecs. The Huskies have five national championships and have won at least 30 games in 12 of the past 14 seasons.
.
Five of SDSU’s first six official games, however, are on the road. Following an exhibition home game against Love and Basketball on Nov. 8, San Diego State begins the season at Nevada on Nov. 11. “When you are looking at our entire non-conference schedule, we are hitting the road early,” Burns said. “We think that’s important since we struggled on the road last year.”
.
Following an away game at St. Mary’s on Nov. 17, the Aztecs play host to Southern Utah on Nov. 20. SDSU defeated the Thunderbirds, 55-52, in Cedar City, Utah, over Thanksgiving break last year. San Diego State then makes the short drive north to compete in the Loyola Marymount University Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 23-24. Indiana State and Jackson State join the Aztecs and host Lions in the two-day event.
.
“We felt by getting into the LMU tournament, it would give us a chance to play on back-to-back nights with something at stake,” Burns said. “We think that is important with such a young team.”After another road game against Cal Poly (Nov. 29), SDSU returns to San Diego to begin a six-game homestand. The Aztecs play host to Cal State Fullerton (Dec. 2), San Diego (Dec. 5) and Navy (Dec. 21), before hosting UConn on Dec. 21.The following weekend San Diego State plays hosts to the third edition of the San Diego Surf ‘N Slam on Dec. 28 and 30. Seton Hall, Western Michigan and Quinnipiac will also appear in the tournament. Each day will feature a pair of games, highlighted by the championship contest on Dec. 30.
.
The Mountain West Conference portion of the schedule, which runs from Jan. 9 through March 8, has once again experienced some change. SDSU will play each of its league games on Wednesday and Saturday, as opposed to playing on four different days a season ago. Like San Diego State’s non-conference schedule, the Aztecs begin the conference slate on the road with three of their first four games and four of their first six away from Montezuma Mesa. SDSU begins the MWC season at TCU on Jan. 9, before playing host to New Mexico on Jan. 12. The Aztecs then travel to Utah (Jan. 16) and Wyoming (Jan. 19), before returning to San Diego for a game against BYU (Jan. 23).
.
“I’ve been saying that, once the preseason poll comes out, either TCU, New Mexico or Wyoming will be picked to finish first,” Burns said. “The good news is that we get to see all three of those teams in the first two weeks of the season. We’ll be tested early. But we’re here to win championships. That is why we have decided on such a hard non-conference schedule. It’s to prepare us for the Mountain West Conference.” On Jan. 26, SDSU travels to UNLV in a game that can be seen on The Mtn., one of two televised games for the Aztecs. San Diego State’s home game against the Rebels on Feb. 27 will also be broadcast on The Mtn. The Aztecs will have as few as three days off at the end of the regular season to prepare for the 2008 Mountain West Conference Championships, slated for March 11-15, at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
