Los Angeles, California - The San Diego State womens tennis team fell to Washington, 4- 0, in Los Angeles in the first round of the Womens Tennis NCAA Championships at the Marks Tennis Center. The Aztecs made their 21st all-time appearance in the NCAA tournament on Saturday. SDSU finishes its season with a 17-9 overall record.
The Huskies took an early lead by taking the doubles point. Joyce Ardies and Denise Dy defeated Holly Bagshaw and Julia Trunk in the first position, 8-1.
Roxanne and Sierra Ellison could not hold off Venise Chan and Aleksandra Malovic in second doubles, ultimately falling, 8-5. With the doubles point clinched, play in the third position was suspended.
In singles action, Samantha Smith outpaced Milana Yusupov in fourth singles, 6-0, 6-0, to make the overall score 2-0 in favor of Washington. Sierra Ellison put up a fight in the sixth position against Malovic, but Ellison would be outpaced, 6-3, 7-5. In fifth singles, Ardies rallied back from being down 4-5 in the first set to defeat Olivia Colman, 7-5, 6-0. With the match clinched at 4-0, play was suspended in the remaining matches.
