Freshman Julia Trunk highlighted the second day of the ITA West Regionals at Barnes Tennis Center for co-host San Diego State by advancing to the quarterfinals, while two Aztec tandems moved on in the doubles bracket.

Trunk stayed alive in the main draw with two victories on Friday afternoon. After defeating USD’s Monica Wiesener in straight sets (7-5, 6-2), she found herself down in the round of 16, but fought back for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, upset over No. 5 seed Yasmin Schnack of UCLA.

In other matches in the round of 32, Esther Cadua fell to UNLV’s No. 9 seed Elena Gantcheva (6-3, 6-3), Milana Yusupov dropped a 6-4, 6-2, decision to No. 6 seed Danielle Steinberg of Arizona and 15th-seeded Eliska Krausova was unable to get past USC’s Lindsay Kintsler (7-5, 6-3).

Over in the consolation bracket, junior Holly Bagshaw and freshman Olivia Colman moved on to the round of 16. Bagshaw defeated Cal State Fullerton’s Erin Wiesener, 6-0, 6-1, after receiving a bye and Colman cruised by Julia Sandborn of Hawai’i, 6-1, 6-0, before earning a hard fought victory over UNLV’s Alisa Razina, 4-6, 7-6(3), 10-7.

In doubles action, two Aztec pairs advanced to the round of 16 in the main draw. The eighth seed of Bagshaw and Krausova recorded an 8-3 triumph over Cal State Fullerton’s Wiesener and Ashley Litchfield, while Cadua and Trunk moved on with a walk over.

After picking up a first round victory yesterday, the doubles teams of Atalay and Yusupov and Nielsen and Kitts, both dropped their matches in the round of 32.

Action at the Wilson/ITA West Regional Championships will continue on Saturday with the doubles round of 16 slated to start at 9 a.m., followed by singles play at 10:30 a.m.
